Exposition of the Relics of Saint Francis Xavier

St. Francis Xavier was born on April 7, 1506 and is popularly called as Goemcho Saib (literally The Boss of Goa).
St. Francis Xavier arrived in Goa in May 1542 after sailing from Lisbon in April 1541.
The body of St.Francis Xavier arrived in Goa on March 16, 1554. Initially the body was exposed to the faithful on the anniversary of his death.
The relics of St.Francis Xavier are placed into a silver casket in the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa.
The first public exposition was held in February 1782. The last exposition was held from November 21, 2004 to January 2, 2005. The present exposition is the seventeenth exposition which has commenced from November 22, 2014 and will conclude on January 4, 2015.
Millions of visitors are expected from all over the world and to this effect the authorities have made proper arrangements for public venerations.
How to get to the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa

All of the vehicles are parked at the Ella farms in Old Goa. Private tour operators, taxis can take you there. After reaching Ella farms there is a free shuttle service provided by the Govt.of Goa, Kadamba Bus Service. The journey from Ella farm to the final destination is approximately 10 to 15 min. The same Kadamba bus service will give you a free ride back to the Ella farms parking area.

A Trek to Netravali Waterfalls in Sanguem, Goa

A trek to Netravali Waterfalls in Sanguem is an enjoyable experience. About two hours drive from Margao city is the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary. The trek to the Waterfalls in the Wildlife Sanctuary is about three km. Some of the trek portion is treacherous.
If you plan to take a trek to the waterfalls ensure the following;
1) An adequate supply of water and food.
2) First Aid Kit.
3) Follow the markings to the waterfalls made by the Forest Department or else have a local guide with yourself.
4) Do not get overdrunk.
5) Do not wait until dark, very easy to lose way.
6) To tread carefully when you cross numerous streams on the way to the waterfalls.
There is a lot of greenery around especially during the rainy season.

There are many buses plying on the Mumbai to Goa route. Most of these buses are the Volvo type. All of the buses have push-back type of seats. Not all buses have A/C and hence cheap fares. Personally I prefer the non-A/C type buses as you can have a continuous supply of fresh air.
If you are starting from Mumbai and want to travel to Margao which is the last destination point in Goa, make sure that the last destination of the bus is Margao. Not all buses go upto Margao, for some buses the final destination is either Mapusa or Panjim.

Kingfisher, Birds of Goa

Goa is known to have in excess of 400 bird species.
This picture is of the Kingfisher, one of the eight species known to exist in Goa. Two decades back the Kingfisher was very common in Goa. Now due to rapid urbanization the Kingfisher is not so commonly seen.
The Kingfisher is a medium sized bird with a comparatively large head, beautifully coloured.
