Ritz Classic is one of the three joints run by the same management. All three are in the city of Panjim. All three joints specialize in fish meals. It is advised to go early at lunch time and be prepared to share a table. The one located at Patto Plaza in Panjim is recommended as there is more room and also ample parking space.

Anandashram

This one is also located in the city of Panjim opposite the casino jetties. This is a very simple restaurant with a modest beginning and over a period of time has become very popular. Tucked in those narrow lanes of Panjim, Anandashram serves a great fish and fish curry rice to the local office goers and also tourists. Also do not forget to have a gulp of the kokum curry a digestive served after your meal.

Casa Bhonsle

Started a few years ago, Casa Bhonsle is now a premium fish-curry joint. Casa Bhonsle is  located in Panjim just above their Café Bhonsle near National Theatre.

Peep’s Kitchen

Peep’s Kitchen is located on the Miramar-Dona Paula Road in Caranzalem which is close to the city of Panjim. The café adjacent to the store serves salad, burgers, gluten-free desserts and fresh juices combining unique aromatic flavours.

Bodega

Café Bodega is housed in an old Goan Portuguese style mansion in the grounds of Sunapranta Centre for the Arts. Around the inner court yard they serve good coffee, juices, fresh baked cakes, super pizzas and sandwiches.

Café de Goa

Café de Goa is located or rather sandwiched between paddy fields in the village of Calangute. The location also houses a grocery store where fruits, vegetables, local farm produce, freshly baked breads and packaged local home made products are also available.

Café de Goa offers a wide assortment of sandwiches, fresh salads, quiches, cakes, muffins, brownies and other confectionary. Street Foods of Goa

Most cities and towns have their own variety of street foods. In Bombay for instance bhel-puri, pani-puri, pao-bhaji, ragda-pattice are common for ages. Only recently Chinese foods have found their way on the Bombay street foods list. In the U.A.E. it is the shawarma, in Indonesia and also in Singapore it’s the nasi goreng.

Goa has its own street food. If you are in Goa for holidays you can try out Goa’s own street food. However such foods are restricted to beef, pork and chicken.

Among the common street foods are the beef croquets, prawn rissois and cutlet pao. The prawn rissois are small dumplings filled with prawns in a creamy sauce. The cutlet pao involves a thin slice of beef soaked in a vinegar based marinade. The beef slice is dipped in egg, semolina (rava) and then fried. This is then stuffed in the local Goan bread called as the poli with some cabbage and onion salad, plus you can get some gravy stuffed inside if you wish to and do not mind your fingers getting messed up.

Another food to try out is the Ros Omlette. Ros is the word for gravy in the local language which is Konkani and omlette is omlette. This dish is known to have originated in the city of Margao in South Goa. The omlette is soiled in the ros i.e in this instance a gravy of chicken and coconut and sprinkled with chopped onions and chillies. If it’s your day you may find some chicken pieces in your ros. The ros omlette is served with the Goan bread pao, in Portuguese its o pao.

Another very common and very popular street food in Goa is the choris pao. Choris is the word in Konkani for the pork sausage, this is then stuffed into the pao.

Beef Roast and Sausage Burger at Anjuna junction

This one shouldn’t be a problem if you are visiting Anjuna Beach. You’ll come across Noronha’s Food Truck parked at the Anjuna Circle, this is the junction between Anjuna-Mapusa and Calangute-Siolim roads. They serve spicy beef chilly, beef roast, sausage burger, beef cutlet to name a few. This is a good spot to go if you are on the North Goa coastal belt.

Chicken Lollipops and Fish Croquettes in Arpora

This joint you will come across at the Dreams Circle in Nagoa, Arpora. This little joint serves some amazing Goan food. Their signature items are the chicken lollipops and fish croquettes which happen to be their own recipe which a combination of Goan and Chinese flavours. Besides this they have the regular chicken items like the cutlets, cafreal and xacuti. This joint is very popular with the locals and tourists.

Cutlet Pao at Miramar

This one is at Miramar circle on the way to Dona Paula. So if you are visiting Dona Paula make sure to visit this joint known as D’Silva’s. Their range is the choris-pao, beef chilliy fry, pork cream chop, sorpotel (a pork dish), chicken and fish cutlets. The Beef cutlet pao is their hot selling item.

Ros Omlette at Panjim Church Square

Ros Omlette is available at street food stalls or carts (a gaddo in Konkani) all across Goa. However some gaddo’s are well known to dish out the tastiest Ros Omlettes. One such is in Panjim Church Square and is better known as Sandeep’s Gaddo. Sandeep is the owner and keeps his joint open starting from evening until late night. Sandeep’s Ros Omlette is accompanied with chicken gravy, topped with chopped onions and a sprinkling of lemon, toasted and buttered local Goan bread. If you happen to pass by Panjim try it out!

Bread Pizza and Schezwan Chaat at Marcel

T For Tasty is a small outlet along College Road in Marcel. They serve affordable items with a touch of uniqueness and creativity. Some of the popular items they serve are the bread pizza, cheesy mushroom sandwiches, chilli cheese toasts, schezwan chaat and some Bombay style fast foods. Their chilli cheese sandwiches are tastier than the one you’ll come across at fancier restaurants or cafes.

Sausage Bread and Sorpotel at Navelim

If you are visiting extreme South Goa beaches Palolem or Agonda you’ll have to pass by Navelim. At the main bus stand in Navelim you’ll come across two ladies spreading out their wares across a table. They serve homemade sorpotel (Goan pork dish) and choris-pao (Goan pork sausage bread). In view of the Navelim locals the sorpotel and choris-pao available here is the tastiest. So if you are ok with pork why not try it out!

The Goabanos at Santacruz

Athenaz is the name of the van parked in Santacruz. Beef, pork and hot dogs are served in different styles. There is a dish they call it Goabanos. In this you’ll have a local multigrain bread stuffed with one of the following; beef kheema, roast beef and pork, Goan sausage, ox tongue or a chicken cafreal along with a fried egg and some garlic mayonnaise. They also serve chicken hotdogs with several accompaniments like home made BBQ sauce.

Snack or a Quick Meal Joints in Goa

Many a times during our short holidays or vacations we do not have time for a full meal and we are always looking for ‘something quick’. We are always on the lookout for that small joint or shack where you can rest for a while and also your order is done fast. Here are a few joints the more popular ones, however they may not be conveniently located on your route and you’ll need to plan to visit these joints or else you’ll need to find a street food joint (to be covered in another post) which hopefully will be enroute. All of these joints are located in North Goa, except one which at Colva in South Goa;

Inspirations

Inspirations lies on the busy NH17 in Porvorim. Its very popular and people drop by regularly for a quick meal. The menu is very simple, chicken, beef or vegetarian curry with a serving of rice and salad. The food does taste great, no wonder its very popular and the prices are reasonable as well. Besides popular Goan snacks they also serve pork pies, roast beef sandwiches and other savouries.

Lily’s Flower

Lily’s Flower is located in Caranzalem. This Flower is easily mistaken for a booze joint from outside and you would wonder what’s the fuss about even when you get inside. But when you try out their food you’ll change your mind. They have an assortment of breakfast in the morning and snacks during the day. Give a try to their delightful prawn rissoles, tuna roll, burgers and hot dogs and the ever refreshing lime soda and water. The Lily’s Flower has sense of largesse, you order a glass of milk shake and invariably they’ll top it up with another half glass more.

Xavier Cafe

Xavier Café is a small café in Mapusa market and is some sort of a landmark in the market area. This café is very popular with the masses coming down to the market for their daily or weekly shopping. So if you happen to be at the well known Mapusa market you can take a break at the Xavier Café. They are known to be popular in serving beef croquettes, prawn patties, vegetarian items and egg chops. Do not be surprised if they have either offered more than ordered either the quantity or additional items not ordered. You will be charged only for the units consumed.

Felicidade

Felicidade is located in the heart of market place in Mapusa. It’s a small bakery and confectionery outlet and very popular for what they dish out. Most the items are sold out even before the evening approaches. Beef cutlets, Croquettes and chops, prawn and chicken sandwiches and burgers are known to be very popular with this joint. They also sell decent cakes and pastries.

Menino Jesus

Menino Jesus is a small eatery in Colva, South Goa. This small snack joint has very reasonable rates for whatever they dish out, hence making it very popular with college going youngsters. However considering their consistent tastes and good rates this small snack joint is equally very popular with families. Besides the variety of snacks they churn out their chicken cheese spring rolls, beef samosas, beef chops and fish cutlets are very well known.
